Hoezo in KINO

Lee Chang-dong’s latest film is already seven years old (we can’t wait for his next project), and its screenplay is adapted from a short story by Haruki Murakami. The story follows a young man who reconnects with an old friend and becomes infatuated with her. She introduces him to a mysterious and wealthy man with a habit of setting abandoned greenhouses on fire. As a psychological thriller, it stands apart from his previous works. However, in true Lee Chang-dong fashion, the film goes beyond its plot to explore themes of obsession, social inequality, and the blurry line between reality and illusion, and we think it gets better after multiple viewings.

Storyline

Deliveryman Jongsu is out on a job when he runs into Haemi, a girl who once lived in his neighbourhood. She asks if he’d mind looking after her cat while she’s away on a trip to Africa. On her return, she introduces to Jongsu an enigmatic young man named Ben, who she met during her trip. One day Ben tells Jongsu about his most unusual hobby.
