“A man has two things in this world: his word and his balls. Or is that three things?” This highly stylized and raucous undercover cop thriller directed by lauded character actor Bill Duke, has the unlikely but deliciously wicked duo of Laurence Fishburne and Jeff Goldblum at its cocaine-filled center. This late entry in our series is an early 90’s update of the crime thriller and represents a new wave of black cinema emerging from Hollywood, together with Boyz ’n the Hood the year before and Menace II Society the year after. Deep Cover might be the lesser known feature but it’s long overdue for a cinematic reappraisal.
